November 1st: New App, New Connections, and a Fresh Look at My Future
Nov. 1, 2024, 11 p.m.
Today felt both fast-paced and full of revelations. It started with a focus on home life - housework and home duties have slipped a little over the last couple of months, and it’s half-term, so everyone’s home... But I knew I had a busy afternoon ahead with a Zoom call scheduled, and then, out of the blue, my phone rang just after 11. It was CI Careers.
I know Code Institute are fiercely serious about helping graduates land suitable roles within six months of course completion, but I always felt a bit like an outlier. I couldn’t quite imagine myself in a traditional job interview. I mean, I’ve gained clients and tackled freelance projects, but an actual interview? My last one was over 20 years ago! I’ve been self-employed for so long that the idea of interviewing felt daunting. So, I guess I felt like my self-employed status might be a roadblock. But, to my surprise, Sarah was still enthusiastic and filled with energy. She reassured me that not only was remote work entirely possible, but that it could actually suit my self-employed status perfectly.
Hearing her say, “Seriously, you’re going to love this…” hit me with a wave of relief I didn’t realise I needed.
There I was, suddenly seeing that lingering cloud of uncertainty lift, and I felt a renewed excitement for what’s ahead. The idea of joining a team, having colleagues to talk with, and working within a supportive structure feels almost like a dream I hadn’t quite admitted I wanted.
Being self-employed is rewarding, but raising kids and managing everything alone can feel isolating. It turns out I may actually be ready for that next step after all!
So, then came the mad dash to update my CV - a task I haven’t needed to do in years. I’d almost forgotten just how much learning and development I’ve done over the last 20+ years. I’ve always been a constant learner, even before I consciously started keeping track of my achievements, so putting all that on paper felt like a huge step forward.
The Zoom group call afterward was refreshing, too, after not joining one for a few weeks. Nice to see those familiar faces. I wonder if they also feel as topsy turvied as I have!
And the website? It’s finally ready (mostly)! I integrated the “members” app - a task I’d been putting off but finally tackled - and the integration was oddly seamless... so far!
I quietly snuck the site link onto my LinkedIn and Instagram profiles, and I also shared it with my “rebel” business group from the in-person “Build a Business with No Money” course. So far, it’s holding up beautifully, but I’m still checking frequently for new members. No sign-ups yet, but I know it’s only a matter of time.
It’s an interesting mix of feelings: pride, anticipation, and a little bit of nervous excitement. It's only been a couple of hours, but I keep refreshing to see if any new “live” users have appeared.
Once the first few join, I’ll start promoting more widely, but for now, I’m just savouring the journey and staying hopeful that the site is ready to make a difference.
